Our Dentists

Peter Sharp

I am the Principal Dentist and Director of Thornaby Dental Centre, a role I have held since 2015. With over 16 years of experience in general, cosmetic, and endodontic dentistry, I am committed to delivering the highest standard of care to my patients while continuously advancing my clinical skills and knowledge.

After graduating from Newcastle University in 2009, I began my career as a House Officer at Newcastle Dental Hospital before moving into general dental practice. My dedication to professional growth led me to complete the MFDS examinations in 2010, becoming a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2011.

I went on to pursue advanced training in restorative dentistry through the Royal College of Surgeons in London and completed a two-year program focused on dental implant placement and restoration. Furthering my expertise, I earned a Diploma in Endodontics from the University of Chester. In 2025 I was awarded Associate Fellowship of the College of General Dentistry (Assoc FCGDent), recognising my contribution to the profession and commitment to excellence in patient care.

Since acquiring Thornaby Dental Centre, I have overseen a comprehensive renovation of the practice, modernised its equipment, and integrated the latest dental technologies—all with the aim of creating a welcoming, state-of-the-art environment for both patients and staff.

Driven by a passion for high-quality, ethical dentistry, I take pride in building long-term relationships with my patients and delivering care that is both clinically sound and personally tailored.

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, video gaming, watching movies and going to the gym.

Dr Dominic Lowther
BDS (Ncle) 2009

I graduated from Newcastle University in 2009, and since then have worked in general dental practice providing both NHS and Private treatments. I carried out my vocational training in Cumbria. Following this I returned to the North East and have developed an interest in carrying out complex endodontic treatment (root canal).

When not in work I am kept busy with my young son, our dog Ralph, and occasionally get the chance to relax watching films, documentaries, and motorsport particularly Formula 1 (which I consistently fall asleep in front of).

Karishma Ahitan

I graduated from Universidad Europa Valencia in 2018. Since graduating I have worked in both NHS and Private practice. I strive to provide the best care to all my patients to help them achieve beautiful and healthy smiles.

As a certified Invisalign provider, I offer patients a discreet, comfortable alternative to traditional braces. With a keen focus on achieving optimal results, I use the latest techniques and technology to craft tailored treatment plans that align with each patient's unique needs and goals.

I am dedicated to delivering the highest standard of care in every aspect of dentistry, whether it’s routine checkups, advanced restorative procedures, or orthodontic services. I am committed to stay up to date with the latest advancements in dental technology and treatments to offer the most effective solutions for my patients. I hope to specialise further in the future.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time travelling and exploring new countries with my husband, socialising with friends, a good book and going to the gym.

Our Dental Hygienist

Karen Rutherford

I qualified as a Hygienist in 1994 whilst serving in the Royal Air Force. I moved home to Middlesbrough after leaving the RAF to have my children.

I have worked in Private and NHS practices in Teesside throughout my career, and I am happy to now be full time here at Thornaby Dental Centre.

The highlight of my career was being awarded “Dental Hygienist of the Year” at the National Dentistry Awards in 2009.
I love working with patients to overcome any fears and nerves and help them to reach gum health and maintain a healthy mouth.

In my spare time I enjoy walking my two mad spaniels and spending time with my family.

Katie Pinter
BSc (Hons) Degree in Oral and Dental Health Sciences (Ncle) 2021

I graduated from Newcastle University in 2021 with a BSc (hons) Degree in Oral and Dental Health Sciences. I am a dual qualified clinician as both a Dental Therapist and Dental Hygienist. I undertake both NHS and Private treatment.

I pride myself in helping people achieve healthy smiles and helping people overcome their dental anxieties. I work very closely with our dentists and support their patients in providing high quality periodontal and hygiene treatment and restorative treatment.

In my spare time I enjoy playing video games, ice skating and also drawing.

Frances Lattimer
BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy 2023

I started my career in dentistry as a Dental nurse in 2014. Having loved it so much I furthered my training at Teesside University and qualified as a Dental Therapist in 2023.
I enjoy all aspects of my role especially educating and motivating patients to improve their oral health.

In my spare time travelling and spending time with my friends and family.

Charlotte Plumb
BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene 2024

I started my career as a Dental Nurse in 2015 then went on to study a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene at Teesside University qualifying in 2024.

I am passionate about helping patients feel at ease during their dental appointments through a gentle and preventative approach. I focus on prevention and have a particular interest in periodontal therapy, working with patients to improve and maintain their gum health.

Away from work, I enjoy keeping fit and active at the gym and love to experiencing new cultures by travelling as much as possible in my free time.
